OPay’s AI-powered digital finance strategy took the spotlight at Digital PayExpo 2026, where the fintech served as Headline Sponsor of the two-day Lagos event. Meanwhile, the Landmark Event Centre hosted the conference on 17 and 18 June, bringing together regulators, financial institutions, and technology leaders. Together, they debated the future of African payments.
First, Dotun Adekunle, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, opened proceedings with a keynote on Africa’s AI-powered fintech future. He argued that Africa’s young population and growing digital economy could drive the next phase of global fintech innovation. During a panel, he said African fintech first focused on inclusion, while AI would now drive integration. Furthermore, he said AI could connect 1.4 billion people into one digital economy. According to Techpoint Africa, his remarks reinforced calls for regulators, investors, and industry leaders to strengthen shared payment infrastructure and digital identity systems.
Next, Adekunle joined the Merchant Payments Observatory panel to discuss AI-driven merchant insights that improve efficiency and support business growth. On day two, OPay hosted “Leadership in the AI Era: Building Responsible and Inclusive Digital Finance.” There, speakers from FintechNGR, EFInA, NIBSS, and OPay explored responsible AI deployment, customer trust, and financial inclusion.
Beyond the sessions, OPay operated an exhibition booth where attendees explored its expanding financial products firsthand. Additionally, the company says technology helps it make financial services more inclusive. Overall, OPay’s participation reflects an industry shift toward responsible AI adoption alongside faster, more inclusive financial services across Africa.
