Paradigm Raises $1.2 Billion to Chase AI and Robotics Bets

Quick Read
  • Crypto-focused VC firm Paradigm closed a fourth fund worth $1.2 billion, its third dedicated venture vehicle, to invest beyond crypto into AI and robotics.
  • The $1.2 billion figure matters because it shows how much capital crypto-native investors are now willing to redirect toward AI and robotics as those sectors heat up.Existing bets from its prior fund, including drone delivery company Zipline and space startup True Anomaly, hint at where the new capital could go next.
  • Paradigm was founded in 2018 by Matt Huang and Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam, and has built a reputation as one of crypto’s most influential venture firms. With this new fund, the firm is signaling that its future may look less like a pure crypto shop and more like a multi-sector “technical frontier” investor.

Crypto-focused venture firm Paradigm has closed a $1.2 billion fund, its fourth overall, marking a decisive move beyond blockchain investing into artificial intelligence and robotics. Founder Matt Huang announced the raise this week, framing it as Paradigm’s third dedicated venture vehicle and a broader bet on what the firm calls the “technical frontier.”

In a blog post with managing partner Alana Palmedo, Huang said the firm will keep backing crypto infrastructure and the reinvention of markets and the financial system, while expanding into categories like drone logistics and orbital spaceflight. Palmedo told Bloomberg that there’s so much else happening right now that’s pretty hard to ignore, pointing to how fast AI progress is pulling investor attention and capital away from crypto-only mandates.

Paradigm’s existing Fund III

The new $1.2 billion fund lands below the $1.5 billion target Paradigm had been seeking, as first reported by the Wall Street Journal back in February, though it still hands the firm significant fresh firepower. Paradigm founded in 2018 by Huang, a former Sequoia Capital partner, and Fred Ehrsam, who co-founded the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and has since become one of the most closely watched names in crypto-native venture investing.

Paradigm’s existing Fund III has already deployed capital into frontier technical bets, including stakes in drone delivery company Zipline and orbital mission operator True Anomaly. The firm also keeps building internal tools such as Reth and Foundry, alongside an EVM security collaboration with OpenAI, underscoring that crypto infrastructure still sits at the core of its strategy even as its ambitions widen.

The fundraise lands as crypto-native investors recalibrate toward AI and robotics, betting that deep technical expertise transfers across frontier sectors. For Paradigm, that means a broader mandate without abandoning its founding thesis, a balancing act other multi-strategy venture firms increasingly attempt as capital chases frontier technology.
