StrainX Bioworks Raises $13M to Scale Alternative Protein Technology

StrainX Bioworks funding

India’s synthetic biology space just got a major vote of confidence. StrainX Bioworks, a precision fermentation and alternative protein startup, has secured $13 million in a funding round co-led by Prime Venture Partners and Leo Capital. The StrainX Bioworks funding also drew participation from Good Startup, Sparrow Capital, Sun Icon Ventures, Dhoka Ventures, and WTF (India) Delhi Angels, signalling broad investor appetite for the sector.

Building in Stealth, Now Ready to Scale

Founded in 2023 by Akshay Mittal and Alok Malaviya, StrainX Bioworks spent its first two years operating quietly, building capabilities across strain engineering, fermentation, process scale-up, and product development. The Bengaluru-based company develops proprietary enzymes, proteins, and metabolites targeting the food, healthcare, and agriculture sectors.

The startup has already demonstrated fermentation at the 10,000-litre scale a significant technical milestone and is now preparing for commercial rollout in India as well as international markets, including the United States. Its integrated platform combines biotechnology, fermentation infrastructure, process engineering, and product development into one end-to-end system designed to compress the timeline from lab discovery to industrial production.

According to Entrackr, the StrainX Bioworks funding will be directed toward expanding research and development, scaling fermentation infrastructure, and growing its scientific and engineering teams to accelerate global commercialisation.

Synthetic biology involves engineering microorganisms to produce molecules traditionally derived from plants or animals, which are then manufactured at scale through industrial fermentation. While the technology has long been central to pharmaceuticals, its application in food and nutrition is rapidly growing as production costs decline. StrainX is positioning itself at that intersection, with ambitions to help reshape how high-value food ingredients are made at industrial scale.
