WeRide and Uber Launch Robotaxi Pilot in Madrid
Madrid is about to become a robotaxi city. WeRide and Uber announced Spain’s first commercial Robotaxi pilot in the Region of Madrid. The service is expected to begin operations later this year, in collaboration with Madrid’s Regional Government, with rides available via the Uber app.
The announcement marks the companies’ first joint entry into the European market.
WeRide vs Uber in Madrid: Roles Explained
In Madrid, the transportation service will be carried out with the support of AVOMO, a Moove Cars Group company and Uber’s AV fleet operations partner in the United States in both Atlanta and Austin, using WeRide’s autonomous driving technology.
The rollout reflects WeRide’s asset-light operating strategy, enabling Robotaxi commercialisation through established partners that contribute fleet investment and platform support.
The parties expect the fleet to scale progressively and will initially include trained vehicle operators, with WeRide, AVOMO, and Uber committed to adding hundreds of Robotaxis as key performance milestones are met, including the expansion of fully driverless commercial service across core urban areas.
Why WeRide Uber Chose Madrid?
Executives say Madrid was selected for its dense urban setting, rising mobility demand, and growing support for autonomous transport.
Spain becomes WeRide’s fifth European market. It also strengthens its position as a trusted robotaxi operator in Europe.
WeRide already holds autonomous driving permits in eight markets: China, UAE, Singapore, France, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and the US. WeRide and Uber formed a strategic partnership in September 2024. They began offering robotaxi services on the Uber platform in the UAE in late 2024.
Fully driverless services now operate in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Uber’s SVP for Autonomous Mobility, Sarfraz Maredia, said Madrid marks an important step in the partnership to expand autonomous mobility globally.
This single city announcement reflects a much larger global rollout strategy.
The Scale Behind This Single City Announcement
Madrid is the fourth city announced under WeRide and Uber’s broader partnership, which targets launches across 15 cities before 2030.
In May 2025, the two companies expanded their strategic partnership. They announced plans to add 15 new cities globally over the next five years, including locations in Europe and the Middle East. Under this agreement, they also plan to deploy tens of thousands of robotaxis on public roads to support safe and reliable autonomous mobility worldwide.
The WeRide Uber Madrid robotaxi launch is part of this global rollout. However, it marks the first time autonomous ride-hailing reaches a major European capital.
