Google announced that the Gemini app has officially surpassed 1 billion monthly users, making it the fastest-growing product in Google’s history.
The rise has been rapid. Gemini had roughly 650 million monthly active users in October 2025, climbed to 750 million by February 2026, and hit 950 million in Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings report released in July. Crossing the billion-user mark puts Gemini in the same league as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which hit its own billion-user milestone in June 2026, and CEO Sundar Pichai noted this makes Gemini the 14th Google product to hit the 1 billion mark.
So how are a billion people actually using it? Voice is becoming the go-to method: 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini, including more “voice only” users, and busy parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. The app is also stepping into the physical world, with one in five Gemini Live interactions going beyond voice, as people use live camera feeds and screen sharing for real-time problem-solving a favorite among DIYers and students. Students, in particular, lean heavily on file sharing, with school-related requests frequently including an attachment.
Small Businesses are Getting Creative Too
Gemini now generates 150 million+ images every day, letting businesses produce images, video, and audio from one place for marketing materials. On Android, Gemini has become genuinely useful for daily errands, now able to automate actions across more than 40 popular apps, whether that’s booking a ride or reserving a table. Apple users are joining in as well, with the app passing 100 million active users on iOS and Mac users prompting it roughly twice as often as other platforms.
With Gemini woven deep into Search, Android, and Workspace, Google says the focus now shifts to the next billion users, aiming to make Gemini its most personal, proactive, and powerful assistant yet.
